Hong Kong - Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of Barclays Bank PLC, today announced the appointments of Peter Ding and Gary Kuo as Co-Heads of Investment Banking, Greater China. Additionally, Gary will also assume the role of Chairman of our Taiwan Investment Banking franchise. Based in Hong Kong, they will jointly lead the firm’s client coverage in the region as they manage and enhance relationships with key clients, working in partnership with the firm’s sector coverage teams. Also joining Barclays Capital is Sheng Wu as Managing Director, Investment Banking, Greater China.
Peter and Gary both join Barclays Capital from Morgan Stanley. Peter Ding was most recently Managing Director, Co-Head of the Mergers & Acquisitions and Restructuring Department. During a 15-year career in M&A and Corporate Finance, he has advised financial institutions and corporates across Asia and brings with him experience that will be invaluable to clients. Notable transactions he has worked on include: advising SINOPEC on a number of international transactions including its first overseas acquisition of FIOC in Kazakhstan; Shagang Steel’s reverse takeover of Grange Resources in Australia; Aegon’s divestiture of its business in Taiwan; and Haier’s investment in Fisher-Paykel (New Zealand). He has also advised on many capital market transactions for clients such as China Communications Construction Company, Shanshui Cement and SINOPEC. Previously, he was with UBS, where he had helped establish the UBS Securities in China, and ING Barings.
Gary brings with him vast knowledge of investment banking, equities, private wealth management and fixed income businesses. Most recently he was Managing Director, Head of Taiwan Investment Banking and Chairman of Morgan Stanley in Taiwan. Gary joined Morgan Stanley in 2001 as Head of Investment Banking Division and was promoted to country Chairman in 2006. Under Gary's leadership for the last 5 years, Morgan Stanley ranked #1 in both M&A and equity capital markets and #2 in securities brokerage among all the foreign investment banks. Some of his notable transactions include Chunghwa Telecom’s ADR, Innolux GDR, Mega Financial Holding Company’s convertible bond offering, ChiMei GDR and its convertible bond offering, sale of Taishin Securities to KGI, sale of China Network Systems (CNS) to MBK, recaplization of Cosmos Bank by GE and SAC and the merger between International Bank of Taipei and Sinopac Financial Holding Company.
Sheng Wu joins Barclays Capital from Citigroup, where he was Managing Director, China Investment Banking Division. Prior to Citigroup, he was at Morgan Stanley with country coverage and regional responsibilities. Over the years, Mr Wu has worked on a number of notable IPO transactions for clients such as AsiaInfo, the first Internet IPO in China; China Shipping; China Telecom; Mengniu Dairy; Shanghai Forte Land, China Unicom, China Coal and China Railway Construction Corporation. Most recently, he advised on the merger between China Netcom and China Unicom as a part of the over all Chinese telecom industry restructuring.
